This snake is not considered dangerous to adults. It prefers forests, grasslands and stony hills, sheltering in small groups under rocks and logs. A fast snake, it feeds on small lizards as soon as night falls.

If disturbed it may hiss, lunge and thrash its body in a whip-like movement. If handled it will emit an ant-like odour. Females give birth to 2–7 live young up to 12cm long, about 5 months after mating. Loss of habitat due to urban sprawl is its worst threat.

Average length 28cm. Conservation status –(Vulnerable in NSW)
